How do you reduce file size on a pdf file?

I have to scan in my transcripts but the files are too large for site's folders. I have tried everything they suggested on the FAQ page to no avail. I am using an all-in-one HP printer with a scanner. There is no option to change the pixels on the scan menu, I've tried changing it in the pdf file but it isn't working. Please help. Thank you.
