Get rid of a lot of tartar?

I don't have dentist as an option so please don't say it, but how at home can I get rid of a large buildup of tartar on a single tooth without picking it off with a dental tool (that's what the dentist would do). Just brush brutishly several times a day on that tooth and do a lot of flossing and swish Listerine? This is making my mouth stink.
