Has anyone read the book the pearl by john steinback?

I just recently reread the Pearl. Avarice mean greed (so the sentence is basically listing his negative traits). Incandescence means shining, brillance, glowing--so the sentence means the pearl took the light it received and shined it back out even more brilliantly. They are lovely uses of words.
