How do I get volume in the roots of my hair?

I have thick shoulder length wavyish sleek hair with a side fringe. What would be the best way of injecting some volume into the roots and messing it up a little? An example of what I'm trying to get is hair a bit like Gabriella Cilmi. It would be much appreciated if you could suggest any methods. x Thanks
